ELA Romeo and Juliet response

1. Reflecting on the fact that you studied and did some online research to learn about Shakespeare and specifically the play of Romeo and Juliet before we started reading it together, what are your thoughts on that process or method of beginning this text study?
It kind of helped me understand the things in it but some of the things I could not understand at all. I just wanted to get done the play but it was good that we did that. It made me understand the characters and who was on who’s side and if they are good or bad.

2. How do you think it changed your experience of Romeo and Juliet, having studied it and learned so much about it before reading it together? Give one specific example to help support your perspective.

It made me know a bit better about the characters and what goes on but other than that, nothing.

3. Would you recommend for other students in the future to go through the step of studying Shakespeare and the play elements before reading it? Explain the reasoning for your answer. Pick one – yes you’d recommend it or no you wouldn’t.

Yes I would recommend it because it helps understand what goes on and the characters.

4. You journaled as Romeo immediately after he killed Tybalt and lost his friend Mercutio. Explain how you felt completing that journalling, first person writing: challenging, easy enough, a breeze? Explain what about it made it this way for you?
It was easy enough writing in first person but how much we had to write was a bit too much. I didn’t really know what to write because we had to put so much. There wasn’t much we could write about at that part but there was still enough.

5. Our debates: You’ve completed many other debates before, you’d shared. How was this debate any different from the others you’ve done previously, or was it different? If it was, in what way was it different? What parts of the planning work helped prepare you for the actual exchange of the debate?

I didn’t like this debate because we didn’t practice enough and I don’t like doing debates. I did most of the work. I’m not really a debate person but maybe if I practiced and tried harder it would make a difference.

6. How do you feel your performance of your debate related to your preparation of the debate?
(Ex: I prepared a lot but performed poorly; it might have been because….. )
(Ex: I didn’t prepare much, but performed really well; it might have been because….)
I prepared good but I did not perform good. I didn’t know what to say.

7. What new elements of developing a presentation have you learned from preparing your Comparison Project? List two specific elements you tried that were different from what you’ve done before and how you felt they worked for you in the end.
You can do different things and not just keep it basic.
Making the text bigger and making pictures match the text.

8. Are you becoming more comfortable with speaking projects and activities? Explain.
Not really because I’m not used to talking in front of these people. Maybe if I really tried to then I could.

B7.2 Romeo and Juliet Movie Reflection

Romeo + Juliet

The movie was pretty good but at sometimes I didn’t like it. It was good because Leonardo DiCaprio was in it. After the party when Romeo goes over it is kind of weird because it seems like she would hear him because he was being loud. But she never did. I thought Mantua was going to be a bigger town but it is just a few little houses. On the way to the party was good because of the lighting and all that stuff. When he meets Juliet it is cool because they see each other through the glass. When Juliet is dancing with Paris it seems like he would’ve noticed that she was looking at Romeo but he never does notice. The actors were really good.

I liked the Mercutio and Tybalt death scenes. They weren’t exactly like the books but they were still good. I thought that Tybalt would’ve shot Mercutio but he stabs him with a piece of glass. Before Tybalt kills Mercutio he was beating up Romeo and then Mercutio starts beating up Tybalt. Romeo gets in between and then Tybalt stabs Mercutio. When Mercutio dies on the sand, Romeo runs to his car and Benvolio chases him. Romeo gets away and takes off. He smashes Tybalt and then shoots him and he falls into some water. It is cool when Mercutio yells there is going to be a plague onto both families because it gets windy and everyone is still standing around. It is kind of cool how they use guns instead of swords.

I didn’t like the ending because in the book he sneaks into the Capulet’s tomb but in the movie everyone knows that he is going and police are shooting at him and he is shooting back. He makes it in and then walks to her. He talks to her for a bit and then puts her ring back on her finger. Just as he is taking the poison in the movie she wakes up and goes to touch him but he gulps it down. She realizes that he is dying and then when he is dead she shoots herself in the head. In the book he takes the poison awhile before she wakes up and then when she sees him dead she kills herself.
